Key Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary teams to develop, design, and bring to market innovative devices and services
  • Design and build innovative technologies in a large distributed computing environment and help guide fundamental changes in the industry
  • Create solutions to run predictions on distributed systems with exposure to advanced technologies at incredible scale and speed
  • Build distributed storage, index, and query systems that are scalable, fault-tolerant, low cost, and easy to manage/use
  • Architect and oversee the development of advanced sensor and optoelectronic systems for Amazon Robotics
  • Own product development from concept through production, including requirements definition, design, prototyping, validation, DVT planning, and release to manufacturing
  • Guide cross-functional technical choices, ensuring alignment across interdisciplinary teams, and providing structure in ambiguous problem spaces
  • Mentor junior engineers, guide design reviews, manage external development partners, and communicate clearly with leadership through concise written and verbal updates

A Day in the Life

A Hardware Development Engineer III spends the day driving sensor and optoelectronic system architecture for Amazon Robotics. They lead technical discussions, clarify requirements, and make design selections across electrical, mechanical, and firmware teams. Hands-on work includes evaluating prototypes, analyzing sensor data, and guiding packaging, PCBA, and thermal integration. The engineer collaborates with operations and vendors to ensure designs scale to production. They also mentor junior engineers, document requirements and test plans, and present concise technical updates to leadership. Internal robotics product teams rely on this role to deliver robust, high-performance sensing solutions.
