Engineering Technician Supervisor

The Traffic Engineering Division is seeking a Traffic Engineering Technician Supervisor who will be responsible for reviewing and approving traffic control plans, coordinating with internal stakeholders on complicated construction phasing projects, and supervising Traffic Engineering Technicians. This position will be supervised by the Traffic Manager.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises traffic engineering staff, acts as a team leader for entry level engineers, technicians, and other support personnel.
  • Supervises, evaluates, trains, and instructs assigned staff; develops operational priorities, goals, and objectives.
  • Participates as a supervisor in selection, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining assigned employees.
  • Conducts investigations into traffic conditions.
  • Coordinates with contractors, developers, and internal city departments to ensure work zones are planned well and do not conflict with one another.
  • Suggests process improvements related to work zone review.
  • Maintains a list of high impact work zones and regularly tracks and updates them.
  • Reviews, corrects, and recommends solutions for work zone traffic control plans.
  • Conducts and analyzes traffic surveys and other studies relating to traffic movement.
  • Makes recommendations for installation or modification of traffic control devices.
  • Prepares work orders for installation or modification of traffic control devices.
  • Responds to public concerns related to traffic issues.
  • Performs field measurements.
  • Develops and implements work procedures and policies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Education:

  • Associate's Degree in engineering technology or related field

Experience:

  • At least 6 years of experience in engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience in municipal engineering.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the basic principles of civil engineering
  • Knowledge of municipal design criteria and specifications
  • Knowledge of City codes relating to engineering functions
  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Skilled in the use of computers and related software
  • Skilled in the use of windows-based programs
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Skilled in checking information for accuracy and completeness and correcting errors

Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Review, correct and recommend solutions to less complex engineering plans.
  • Perform complex mathematical computations.
  • Establish and fulfill goals and objectives.
  • Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Colorado Driver's License with a good driving history

Working Conditions:

  • Essential Personnel: When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
  • Physical Demands: Light work that involves moving and/or lifting at least 20 pounds at a time with or without assistance. Light to moderate physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 25 lbs. with or without assistance. Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing. Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate office equipment. Vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information. Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.
  • Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment with occasional outdoor work including exposure to varying weather conditions, noise and dust, and traffic and electric hazards.
  • Equipment Used: Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as a part of the library automated systems. This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
