Engineering Lead

The purpose of the Engineering Lead is to support the Lab leadership and the teams within their area to deliver against the strategy and their goals. Are you ready to join our Transport Platform team and help us to shape and deliver the next phase of our transformation? The role sits within the Transport Platform, which is a key member of the wider Consumer Lending Business Unit. Our mission is to keep Britain moving by providing customer focused solutions to facilitate access to vehicles, maintenance, and related services including Digital account management. As a Lead Software Engineer, you'll lead a group of engineers to design, develop and integrate software features to achieve their goals. Working within a Lab Feature Team alongside Product Owner and Quality Engineers to achieve business and technology outcomes whilst retaining a deep focus on service.

Job Description

Job Title: Engineering Lead

Salary: £90,440-£106,400

Location(s): Newport

Hours: Full-time - 35 hours per week

Working Pattern: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at one of our office sites.

Strengthening the team by coaching, developing and mentoring engineers on how to achieve their team, technical and personal goals. Attracting new talent into the team, managing retentions risks within the team, and by expanding your own skills – promoting a true Learning Culture by your own actions
  • Aligning team goals with the needs of the broader lab, platform and group
  • Collaborating with the Product Owner, Customer Journey Manager, Lead Quality Engineer and Business SMEs to deliver features on the product roadmaps, manage down technical debt, maintain the health of production instances and to create the space to develop the skills needed by the target technology architecture
  • Engineer solutions to be reliable, scalable, performant, accessible, and secure through adequate solution design, utilising endorsed technologies and applying common build patterns. Engage the Solution Architecture and Technical Communities where needed to drive solution reuse, avoid complexity and creation of point solutions
  • Seeking to adopt the groups tooling capabilities as these mature to access development practice gains through standardised automation in relation to pace, quality and safety
  • Seeking to better understand the work through planning, commit to clear achievable goals, drive appropriate prioritisation, foster collective responsibility of ceremonies, escalate impediments, accordingly, manage external dependencies adequately, act on learnings and to recognise successes
  • Taking hands on ownership for unblocking technical challenges and forward look to prove out new patterns and technical solutions ready for full use within the team, lab or platform. Where needed, act as a Chapter Lead to drive cross platform strategies and solutions
  • Collaborating with Agility Leads to advance the effectiveness of the team by installing change that increases the cadence of delivery, reduces cost ownership, and persists high quality of change. Champion the benefits of a single common framework over team specific practices
  • Installing active application custodianship to manage incidents, compliance findings, risks and running costs where it's the right answer for the team to maintain production instances. Where it's not, ensure performing teams are equipped to succeed

We Are Looking For People Who Have:

To be considered for and successful in this role, you will need to be able to demonstrate the below:

  • Experience in technical leadership which includes leading a cross-functional teams of 6 to 8 engineers per team to deliver high quality applications at scale.
  • Proficiency in a modern object orientated language, JavaScript and Java.
  • Deep understanding of the server-side or client-side application stack both breadth and depth in building APIs or Web Applications, using Node.js, Spring Boot or React.js frameworks and applying SOLID, RESTful principles or package management with database interactions (Structured and unstructured).
  • Experience in designing, developing and testing complex systems in and agile context (utilising orchestration automate), with strong architectural thinking and with an ability to break down ambiguous problems.
  • Experience working on public cloud environments e.g. Google GCP, MS Azure, Amazon AWS.
  • Experience working across a team to embed a culture of collaboration and ownership. Contributing to Communities of Practice where colleagues share knowledge, take initiative and deliver on commitments.
