Senior Manager

The Senior Manager oversees the development of models to analyze and project a broad range of financial and actuarial functions including product pricing and rate reviews, financial planning and forecasting, trend analysis, product development, provider risk analysis, and the valuation of emerging liabilities. This role will work closely with one or more departments including underwriting, sales, network contracting, operations, sales, product management, finance, and clinical services. This role will have a staff of healthcare analysts, actuarial students and/or credentialed actuaries. This position will require mentoring and training of staff and will support recruiting and development activities. An understanding of the health insurance industry, strong interpersonal skills and technical proficiency in relational databases, data warehouses, Excel and statistical modeling are required.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Leadership / Managerial Responsibilities
    • Identifies and addresses development needs of staff through coaching and oversight
    • Recruits, trains, develops, and supervises analyst and/or management-level staff, through direct or matrix reporting
    • Mentor and develop staff using situational leadership techniques
    • Manage stakeholders using advanced organizational knowledge
    • Applies own judgment with consultation from Director as needed on the design, organization, prioritization, and implementation of projects and processes
  • Planning, Design, Project / Process Management
    • Assists Director in translating corporate and department goals into specific initiatives
    • Integrates work across business functions within/outside department, and external to Point32Health where relevant
    • Independently designs, executes and/or oversees a portfolio of closely related projects or analytic processes
    • Designs and implements the approach, methods and processes for achieving department goals
    • Facilitates planning and review sessions with multiple department stakeholders and Sr leadership
    • Prioritizes initiatives and works with director to determine resource needs to achieve department and/or organization goals
    • Assists Director in developing appropriate staffing or team organization to support objectives
  • Technical Analysis
    • Defines key objectives of technical processes developed by others and assures deliverables meet stated objectives
    • Designs and builds technical processes to address business issues
    • Provides input into and/or help structure program code for more junior staff
    • Oversees the technical work of others
    • Evaluates current technical processes developed by their team and/or others and makes suggestions for improvements and/or increased efficiency
  • Checking/Validation/Peer Review
    • Assists Director in defining quality standards and acceptable tolerance levels for error
    • Develops criteria to validate results in light of prior expectations and investigates unusual results and offers explanations
    • Assists colleagues and more junior staff with validation/checking activities
    • Ensures the accuracy of deliverables through oversight of the work of others
    • Conducts peer review and challenges results and assumptions to assure quality and accuracy
  • Analysis/Interpretation
    • Integrates information from multiple sources and vets results with organizational stakeholders to get feedback and reach agreement on interpretation in a larger business context
    • Identifies implications when analysis results in departmental or corporate action (e.g. new programs, new methodology, key business decisions)
    • Identifies reasonable conclusions/assumptions and vets with organizational stakeholders to get feedback and reach agreement
  • Communication/Presentation of Results
    • Packages and presents results to demonstrate link between analysis and broad business context
    • Ensures that deliverables meet stakeholder needs and are packaged and presented to draw conclusions and influence decision-making by Sr management
    • Anticipates questions and provides context and support for the results
    • Assists Director in leading decision-making processes using analytic results
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education, Certification and Licensure

  • College degree in related field or equivalent education/training
  • ASA or FSA designation
Experience
  • 8+ years of healthcare actuarial / analytic experience
  • 6+ years of experience managing teams and individuals in a direct report and/or matrix environment
Skill Requirements
  • Sufficient understanding of relational databases, statistical packages, spreadsheet and/or database applications to oversee work of others
  • Ability to develop, implement, and ensure compliance with Actuarial department standards and processes
  • Ability to provide regular management oversight of all tasks, projects and processes to meet deadlines and communicate progress to manager
  • Ability to facilitate and participate in planning and review sessions with senior leadership
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to navigate political issues using advanced organizational knowledge
  • Ability to influence and resolve conflict within own staff and/or project team
  • Ability to effectively manage difficult group dynamics to reach a positive outcome
  • Ability to manage change and motivate teams to be high performing
Working Conditions and Additional Requirements (include special requirements, e.g., lifting, travel):
  • Must be able to work under normal office conditions and work from home as required.
  • Work may require simultaneous use of a telephone/headset and PC/keyboard and sitting for extended durations.
  • May be required to work additional hours beyond standard work schedule.

Salary Range

$159,585.60 -$239,378.40

The annual base salary range provided for this position represents a range of salaries for this role and similar roles across the organization. The actual salary for this position will be determined by several factors, including the scope and complexity of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; as well as internal equity. As part of our comprehensive total rewards program, colleagues are also eligible for variable pay. Eligibility for any bonus, commission, benefits, or any other form of compensation and benefits remains in the Company's sole discretion and may be modified at the Company's sole discretion, consistent with the law.
