Transmission Operations Specialist, Broadcast Operations

Los Angeles, California, United States of America

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced Transmission Operations Specialist to serve as the architect of our global signal acquisition strategy. As we scale to support high-density concurrent events, we are organizing transmission coordination operations efforts within the Broadcast Operations & Transmission team.

In this role, you will be the "lead of transmission logistics". You will bridge the gap between production and broadcast operations, ensuring that every dollar spent on connectivity delivers maximum reliability and quality. You will take full ownership of the Transmission information in our Transmission book (the single source of truth for our Broadcast Operation) and negotiate the complex landscape of satellite, fiber, and IP contribution vendors to support our productions and our team in the Transmission Operations Center.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Acquisition & Vendor Management

  • Centralized Procurement: Take ownership of booking satellite time (C-band, Ku-band), fiber circuits, and cellular bonding equipment, transitioning these duties away from third-party production companies to secure preferential rates without markups.
  • Vendor Relations: Cultivate and maintain high-level partnerships with global transmission vendors (e.g., Tata, SES, AT&T, Lumen, PSSI and NEP) to negotiate volume discounts and ensure priority service during high-demand periods.

Workflow Architecture & Documentation

  • The Transmission Book: Architect and maintain the "Transmission Book," ensuring it serves as the absolute reference for internal teams within the Transmission Operations Center and external partners regarding signal flow, encoding formats, and encryption.
  • Operational Standardization: Develop Departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for transmission delivery to reduce overhead for Production and Broadcast Operations teams.
  • Event Alignment: Validate the transmission data to ensure accuracy for downstream technical teams operating in our Transmission Operations Center (TOC) and Broadcast Control Rooms (BCR).

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Transmission Liaison: Act as the central resource for the Broadcast Operations team and the production teams, ensuring there is full alignment on the transmission strategy for each event.
  • Redundancy Planning: Consult with engineering teams to design robust redundancy strategies for each Netflix Live Event (e.g., satellite backup for fiber paths).
  • Fiscal Oversight: Track, report, and reconcile vendor invoices, assisting with fiscal budgeting and forecasting to drive cost-efficiency across our transmission portfolio.
  • Having key relationships with onsite transmission vendors and tech managers in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Qualifications

Industry Experience

  • 5+ years of broadcast transmission operations experience, ideally having experience in working with major network organizations both domestically in the United States and internationally in Europe and Asia.
  • Proven track record in a "Lead" or "Senior" bookings role, capable of managing high-paced live television environments and multitasking across concurrent events.

Technical Expertise

  • Signal Transport: Deep understanding of the international transmission landscape, including satellite orbits/downlinks, fiber optic networks, and IP transport protocols (SRT, Zixi, SMPTE-2110, RTS/TS).
  • Compression & Encoding: Extensive knowledge of compression technologies (HEVC, AVC, J2K) and standards conversion (frame rate, HD/ASI, 1080p/720p/UHD) to effectively book the correct resources for TCOs to monitor.
  • Cloud & Hardware: Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure and ground ingest capabilities to support our hybrid hardware/cloud workflows.

Core Competencies

  • Financial Acumen: A firm grasp of pricing models from a transmission vendor perspective, with the ability to negotiate contracts that balance cost vs. reliability.
  • Operational Leadership: Ability to organize and maintain transmission details in the transmission book and serve as an escalation point for complex logistical hurdles.

Why This Role Matters

Currently, our reliance on external teams for booking information creates potential for misalignment and delays. As a Transmission Operations Specialist, you will eliminate these gaps. By centralizing the "logistics of logic," you empower our Transmission Control Operators (TCOs) to focus on signal quality and our Broadcast Control Operators (BCOs) to focus on event execution, creating a cohesive, fail-safe environment for our most critical live moments.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $230,000.00 - $320,000.00.
